maids services

Two years back, on June 1, 2016, administrative Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould was accompanied to her seat before Canada’s Senate to clarify her administration’s method of reasoning for Bill C-14, an authoritative invention with a name from a secondary school science class and the full capacity to change Canadian culture until the end of time.

The equity priest’s introductory statements were a comparative mix of request that the bill was a brilliant illustration of lucidity, reason, and equalization while simultaneously offering consolation it would not tie the hands of specialists entrusted with murdering their patients on solicitation. C-14 wedded severe protections with what Wilson-Raybould, venturing into her plush pack of political language, called “intentional adaptability” in the conveyance of medicinal passing.

“It works in clear statutory parameters around the sorts of people who are qualified (and) was painstakingly made to give however much adaptability as could be expected to therapeutic experts to decide when and how an individual’s passing has turned out to be sensibly predictable,” the clergyman seemed to clarify.

What ought to have been a pivotal crossroads in Parliamentary history turned into a slipstream of vagueness, an obfuscated all-will-be-well juggling act, that mirrored the lethal imperfection in the enactment. The shortcoming keeps on plagueing maids services even now on the second commemoration of its presentation.

In decency, the equity clergyman could have reasonably set up her hands and told the collected Senators: “It’s not my issue.”

The disappointments in the real composition of Bill C-14 are on the Liberals. Be that as it may, the hidden imperfections brought about by the scramble to get it finished to fulfill a time constraint set by the Supreme Court of Canada have a place decisively with the past Conservative government. During the race year of 2015, in the result of the Supreme Court’s choice, the Harper Tories steadfastly would not contact, significantly less proceed onward, the re-composing of Canada’s laws with respect to helped passing.

As one senior employable in the head administrator’s office let me know secretly: “That issue isn’t even on our radar.”

Obviously, it didn’t require modern following innovation to predict what might pursue from the Court’s February 6, 2015 governing in the purported Carter case. The result of Carter, presently known by the anodyne abbreviation maids services (Medical Assistance in Dying), was a snapshot of radical change for Canadian law, prescription, and our normal life. Without precedent for our history, specialists and patients, not nature and fortune, could legitimately and definitely fix the selected time of death.

“The entire wellbeing worldview has been flipped around.” – Dr. Paul Saba

In Carter, the Court consistently hurled aside its Rodriguez administering from 1993. Laws against helped suicide that were controlled intrinsically legitimate in Rodriguez were esteemed naturally invalid when Carter moved around 22 years after the fact.

Out went the “holiness of life” depended on by the Court in Rodriguez to maintain existing laws against helped suicide. In came the Carter rule of “deplorable misery” as legitimate support for restoratively controlled demise. The sheer speed of the change was as agitating as its progressive legitimate, therapeutic, and good ramifications. In negligible months, Canada’s long-standing comprehension of how life appropriately finishes vanished quicker than a solidified cadaver on downhill skis.

No extraordinary riddle, there was in this manner colossal weight on the Harper government to utilize the Canadian Constitution’s despite statement to purchase time to draft a satisfactory reaction to Carter. No way. There were then requires a Royal Commission to sound out what Canadians truly needed. Hard of hearing ear. There was weight on backbench Tory MPs to acquaint private individuals bills with assistance outline the reaction. Dead on entry.

When Justice Minister Wilson-Raybould showed up in Parliament’s assembly of calm doubt, as the Senate is regularly called, the last call clock was ticking on a Supreme Court-forced June 17, 2016 due date to make maids services the tradition that must be adhered to. B.C. Moderate MP Mark Warawa still vapor when he discusses the council procedure that was rapidly assembled to audit the draft enactment. The desperation to pass the bill, he reviews, permitted a substantial slanting toward the individuals who supported restoratively controlled demise, and boxed out a large number of those restricted. He notes, for instance, that the Dying With Dignity hall gathering had three distinct observers show up at various occasions before the board. However he was hindered from welcoming noticeable contradicting gatherings to express their worries.

Specialists Denounce Quebec’s Inadequate ‘Ideal to Die’ Law

Helped passings expanded by right around 30 percent in second 50% of 2017: report

Choisir l’aide médicale à mourir à 27 ans

“When Dying With Dignity appeared a second and third time, I said ‘Gee, we’ve officially gotten notification from your gathering. Has your position changed?’ And they said ‘No, we’re here with new data.’ It was a similar data fortified multiple times. However various socially traditionalist specialists were not allowed to affirm in light of the fact that there wasn’t sufficient opportunity. It showed a solid, exceptionally undesirable predisposition.”

The outcome, Warawa says, is profound perplexity the nation over about what the law really is concerning MAiD. It’s vulnerability that is exacerbated by an interwoven of common guidelines, steady weight from promoters for therapeutically helped demise to expel remaining hindrances, and absence of accuracy in C-14 itself.

“What we have right currently has been depicted as the Wild, Wild West,” Warawa says. “When you have enactment that is not clear, you get overeager advertisers who attempt to accept it to the extent they can, regardless of whether that implies going over the line. Their resistance is constantly, ‘Well, I thought the law allowed it.… ‘ If we’re not authorizing the law since we don’t have a clue what the law implies, at that point we’re not acting like a majority rule government.”

The Langley-Aldergrove MP refers to for instance Dr. Ellen Wiebe, a Vancouver-zone doctor who caused contention the previous winter when she went into an Orthodox Jewish nursing home in the city and controlled MAiD to an older patient in spite of the office’s refusal to permit it on the premises. Warawa is angered that there wasn’t even a criminal examination concerning her activity, which he accepts plainly went “over the line” of what C-14 permits.

As far as concerns her, Wiebe completely rejects any trace of inappropriateness. Unexpectedly, she says, she works inside the law to secure the privileges of patients to get MAiD whether the office allows the methodology.

“To me, places don’t have good rights. Spots don’t have hearts, just individuals do. It’s an extraordinary spot. It’s (the patient’s) home. Somebody (denying MAiD) is taking (a patient’s) rights away incredible their home. That is the reason a spot ought to never have rights.”

Yet, even Dr. Wiebe, an unmistakable voice for Dying With Dignity and a submitted MAiD supplier, recognizes that she regularly “works at the edge of the law” on the grounds that the enactment itself needs explicitness. She closed inside the primary year of legitimization that she would need to depend on her own best judgment about whether to manage passing.

Neither the re-composed government enactment, nor common guidelines that tailed it, characterize with clearness when a patient can get MAiD, she says. Simultaneously, Dr. Wiebe accepts wholeheartedly that any rationally skilled individual who demands restoratively helped passing for the alleviation of enduring has a privilege to get it. What’s more, enduring, she says, is an abstract judgment for the patient to make.

Dr. Wiebe says when she attempted preparing in the Netherlands for directing willful extermination, she considered the to be as one of an obvious human ideal to self-rule. Falling back on close to home judgment felt paternalistic to her. Leaving it to the individual judgment of some expert specialist—even a specialist such as herself—felt like obstruction in a basic human ideal to bite the dust when one picked.

“At that point when I began doing it, I understood that I for one should be persuaded for each situation. I give what is straight up to the edge of the law, and never past, obviously. I’m working past where a few suppliers would work… it changes on how hazard unwilling individuals are. We need to submit 17 pages of desk work, and we are being investigated line by line.”

She recognizes, in any case, that the line, or edge, has just moved fundamentally since she gave her first medicinally helped passing in February 2016, four months in front of the law being changed to make it legitimate. Some portion of the test is the government enactment now permits (or limits, contingent upon point of view) MAiD to when demise is “within a reasonable time-frame” yet does not plainly characterize what that implies.

The individual definition Dr. Wiebe at first worked from depended on Justice Minister Wilson-Raybould’s declaration to the Senate. Kay Carter, the focal figure in the 2015 Supreme Court choice, would qualify under the “not so distant” wording, as per the equity serve.

Dr. Wiebe takes note of that Carter was 89 when she passed on, and had experienced spinal stenosis, an agonizing however not perilous, condition. Her future would regularly have been around five years, she says.

“In the event that that was characteristic demise within a reasonable time-frame as indicated by our equity serve, at that point that was beneficial for me,” Dr. Wiebe says.

A little more than a year later, be that as it may, in June 2017, Ontario Superior Court Justice Paul Perell led for a situation called A.B. versus Canada that a 77-year-old who experienced fiery joint inflammation confronted passing “within a reasonable time-frame” and was eligibl

Dust the ceiling and corners of walls; you will need a dust mop to reach the high spots. Determine if the walls need to be washed in dirty spots. Spot wash and don’t forget air vents, doorknobs, doors, and switch plates. Walls will likely need to be washed more often in this room than in others. You may not have noticed that the hand mixer or blender sloshed goop all over the wall; clean the grease, grime, and spilled food from your walls.

Once the fridge is done, return to the oven, wipe away the grease and residue, and follow the directions on the oven cleaner.

Work on the Countertops and Sink

Wash the countertops in your kitchen and the skin. Do not forget the backsplashes. If you have a garbage disposal, now is the time to pour baking soda with warm water or a lemon peel down the disposal to freshen the drain. Put ice cubes through the disposal to sharpen the blades.

cleaning product

cleaning product , Corrosive ingredients in toilet bowl cleaners are severe eye, skin and respiratory irritants. Some toilet bowl cleaners contain sulfates, which may trigger asthma attacks in those with asthma. And bathroom cleaners containing sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite (bleach), or phosphoric acid can irritate lungs and burn eyes, skin and, if ingested, internal organs. Mixing acid-containing toilet bowl cleaners with cleaners that contain chlorine will form lung-damaging chlorine gas. Your safest best is to avoid both ingredients.

Soap and water, or baking soda for scrubbing soap scum and toilet bowls, work for most bathroom cleaning needs. Scrubbing shower tiles with a toothbrush of baking soda-water paste will help remove mildew and its stains. For tougher toilet jobs, pour one cup of borax and 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar or lemon juice into the bowl. Let sit for a few hours, then scrub with a toilet brush and flush. Enzymes are naturally occurring proteins produced by all living organisms to speed up chemical reactions. Enzyme cleaners make use of these naturally occurring enzymes to break down the proteins in specific targets: Protease enzymes work on protein stains, lipolases fat or lipid stains, and amylases starch- or other carbohydrate-based stains. Allergy sufferers should avoid using enzyme cleaners on carpets, as the enzymes remain in the carpet fibers after cleaning and subsequent vacuuming can lead to prolonged exposure. Some enzyme cleaners still contain the same harsh surfactants, chemicals and preservatives found in standard cleaners, so be sure to read the label carefully.

Chemical drain cleaners are among the most dangerous of all cleaning product . Most contain corrosive ingredients such as sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite (bleach) that can permanently burn eyes and skin. Some can be fatal if ingested.

Prevent drains from becoming blocked in the first place by capturing hair and other drain-clogging particles with inexpensive metal or plastic drain screens, available at home improvement and hardware stores. Regularly collect and dispose of hair that collects around shower or sink drains, and do not allow large food scraps to wash down the kitchen sink.

When clogs occur, use a “snake” plumbing tool to manually remove blockage, or try suction removal with a plunger. If you purchase a chemical drain cleaner, choose one of the two below that use enzymes, rather than caustic chemicals, to eat away gunk. Earth Friendly is available in natural foods stores; Naturally Yours must be ordered by mail. Like chemical cleaners, these are most effective on drains that are only partly clogged.

Keeping Your Carpet Clean And Healthy
Carpets require special attention and care to maintain its appearance that you always envisioned it to be. Here are some carpet cleaning tips brought to you by AJS Carpet Cleaning American Fork to keep your carpets looking clean and healthy all year long.

Be Knowledgeable on what your carpet needs.

Knowing the type of carpet you have can help in determining the proper care for it. Nylon types are the most durable and easiest to clean, however they don’t conceal stain as good as a wool type. Wool carpets have natural water and stain repellant properties because it has less static that attracts dirt than synthetic ones. The downside is that wool carpets tend to be more expensive.

Wools can be damaged if improper treatment is applied, so be on the know-how on what type of carpet you have and it’s corresponding maintenance.

Usually, carpet manufacturers provide manual on how to properly care for their product. And one thing that stands out is that warranty is void if improper cleaning method is used.

Don’t let soil erode your carpet

One of the basic things to understand is that soiling can cause problems later on, so prevent them from stacking up by vacuuming every once in a while. Another precaution to take is to place a doormat to prevent large amount of soil from coming in. If you have pets, then try to keep them from urinating by training them on a designated spot. If accidents do happen, be quick to fix things up by exercising first aid options on the spotting.

Move your furniture once in a while.

Crushing is another problem that usually occurs when heavy objects (like furniture) are set for a long period of time, which is why it is beneficial to move your carpet every once in a while, even if it is only a few inches.

A first-aid kit for your carpet usually composed of DIY household items that can be found on your kitchen countertop, however for a far more sensible containment, it is better to buy carpet cleaning solutions that smell better than vinegar.

Baking soda is a great component to dissolve the odor; they also prevent stain from holding on to your carpet fibers by loosening their grip. DIY usually composed of some laundry detergent and lots of water. However, prevent scrubbing as it might cause breakage or the stain expanding to more areas.

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of doing this all by yourself, then by all means, call in a professional carpet cleaning company that has far more advance and powerful equipment that can extract dirt from deep down the carpet’s fibers. Have at least one to two professional carpet cleaning every year. The heavier the traffic that your carpets have, the more frequent your call to professional carpet cleaning should be

How can I find a good air duct cleaner?

EPA and NADCA agree that if you do hire someone to clean your ac cleaning make sure they know what they’re doing — a poor job is worse than no cleaning at all, as it can kick up particles or even break portions of the HVAC system.

Venice warns homeowners to beware of air duct cleaning scams, especially the sort where unscrupulous cleaners offer a $49 special deal but start piling on extra fees. “It’s a bait and switch scam where they say they’ll offer unlimited cleaning, but then they throw around terms you might not understand, such as extra fees for a ‘main duct line,’” he says. “And many times, these cleaners end up walking out the door with twice the amount of money a reputable duct cleaner would charge. They’ve gotten very sophisticated at upselling.”

Since most states and municipalities don’t license air duct cleaners, you need to check their professional credentials instead, such as NADCA membership. EPA recommends all duct cleaners follow NADCA standards. Member companies must keep at least one technician on staff who has passed a NADCA test. “They have to pass rigorous testing to earn the certificate, and our code of ethics is very important,” Vinick says.

Tom Bergendahl of Wakefield, Massachusetts, wishes he’d hired a reputable service to clean his air ducts instead of a local company that has since gone out of business. “Duct cleaning is a fragile operation, and if you don’t do it right, you can damage the system,” he says. “They completely wrecked the motor.”

The company eventually paid to repair the damage, but Bergendahl still doesn’t feel the work improved air quality or energy efficiency. “Why did I even bother?” he asks.

The cost for quality air duct cleaning averages between $300 and $500. (Photo by Eldon Lindsay)

What are some benefits of duct cleaning?
Despite Bergendahl’s experience, Vinick says NADCA’s certification standards have improved the situation. “A lot of [service companies] weren’t going about it the correct way,” he says. “We have an anti-fraud task force, and we’ve gone after some fraudulent duct cleaners with the help of state attorneys general.” He suggests that in addition to NADCA membership, homeowners make sure their cleaners are an established business, have appropriate insurance and are registered to do business in their state and locality.

Other organizations have also established guidelines. The EPA’s brochure provides a post-cleaning checklist, and in 2007, the ac cleaning Contractors of America published criteria for HVAC service providers.

While none of the groups claim health benefits from clean air ducts, many Angie’s List members report an improvement. “I haven’t woken up stuffy or congested since,” says Margaret Hopkins of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. “After the cleaning, my home smelled better and there was less dust on my furniture.”

Experts say research on the health benefits of residential duct cleaning is still in its infancy. Glenn Fellman, the Indoor Air Quality Association’s executive director, says that despite the lack of scientific data, he’s seen and heard much common-sense evidence of improved air quality.

“This is the heart and circulatory system of your house,” Fellman says. “If any of it is gunked up with dust or mold, the core system isn’t going to function correctly.”

Vinick says he’s encountered much anecdotal evidence of the benefits of air duct cleaning. “You could ask the tens of thousands of customers that I’ve had in 26 years about their improved energy consumption and healthy home environment,” he says.

Ultimately, the decision to clean air ducts comes down to a homeowner’s own judgment. “Look at your filter and see if it’s dirty,” Vinick says. “Take a look inside the return grills and supply ductwork and you’ll be able to tell if you have debris buildup.”

Duct Cleaning

Cleaning Service
Don’t let your indoor air quality be compromised by a dirty duct system. Each time your heating and cooling system runs, dust, dirt, pollen, animal dander and other airborne contaminants are pulled into your duct system. The build-up of these contaminants can cause your duct system to become a breeding ground for bacteria, fungus, mildew and other microbes.

BGE HOME’s duct cleaning service can remove these contaminants from your system and is the most effective way to eliminate air duct pollutants. It also helps restore heating and air conditioning system capacity and reduces running time.

How It Works: Duct Cleaning
Source removal duct cleaning is the cornerstone of any indoor air quality remediation program. Our duct cleaning system utilizes the HEPA-AIRE method, which is the most advanced source-removal system available. It is widely recognized as being the most significant breakthrough in duct cleaning technology in the past 30 years and is used by professionals throughout North America.

The key components of this system are the patented HEPA-AIRE portable power vacuum and the AIR-SWEEP® compressor. This system enables our technicians to reach and thoroughly clean your entire duct system with minimal noise and disruption. The vacuum is connected to your duct work near your furnace. The technician then goes through your home and blows high-pressure air through your vent system starting from the furthest point and working towards the furnace. The final step is to blow air through the main ducts in your basement pushing debris towards the vacuum location.

Benefits of Duct Cleaning
Improving your indoor air quality is the healthiest home improvement you can make, and cleaning ductwork will improve the quality of the air in your home.

If you answer YES to any of these questions, you should consider BGE HOME’s duct cleaning service.

Does anyone in your home have allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems?
Does anyone in your family suffer from headaches, nasal congestion or other sinus problems at night or in the morning?
Is there a smoker in the house?
Do you have pets?
Do you notice musty or stale odors when the furnace or air conditioner runs?
Do you notice dust on your furniture shortly after cleaning?
Does it seem that there is not enough airflow coming from your vents?
Is your furnace equipped with only a standard throwaway fiberglass filter?
Having your ducts cleaned can help alleviate these problems when caused by poor indoor air quality. Duct cleaning will rid of the build-up of allergens in your duct system, and prevent these allergens from being circulated throughout your home by your forced air system. Ducts should be cleaned at least every five years or as necessary. Once you have had your ducts professionally cleaned, it’s a good idea to consider an whole house electronic air cleaner to help maintain optimum indoor air quality.

Efficiency & Savings: Duct Cleaning
As dust, dander and other airborne contaminants accumulate within your air duct system, the efficiency of your heating and air conditioning system may be reduced. The contaminants trapped within the duct system will circulate continuously throughout your home, and begin to impede air flow. As air flow is reduced, the ability of your heating and cooling system to operate efficiently is impacted.

A clogged air duct system causes your heating and air conditioning system to work harder and use more energy to heat and cool your home. Air duct cleaning from BGE HOME can help improve the quality of air inside your home, while increasing the efficiency of your heating and air conditioning equipment.

Maid Service

When a professional Maid Service is better than an individual cleaner
Your schedule is full work, family and other activities definitely take quite a bit of your time and you have finally taken the decision to look for help with your house cleaning needs.
Who is going to take care of your most valuable asset is the next question. Do I hire an individual cleaner or a house cleaning company?

We have put together 7 facts that can help you take this important decision.

  1. Availability
When you hire an individual cleaner, you are basically tied to her schedule and availability. What happens in case your house cleaner has things to do, errands that can’t be postponed or gets sick on your cleaning day?

With a professional maids service you will not run into these issues. Professional house cleaning services have defined work schedules and back up programs in case house cleaning technicians do not show up for work.

  1. Training
Individual house cleaners generally apply the cleaning concepts they use when cleaning their own place at their customers houses. After all, cleaning is cleaning no matter where you do it right?

Well, it is not that simple, cleaning houses in a professional way is a different story. Responsible maid services has developed an initial instruction with lessons and hands-on experience. This is always complemented with ongoing education which is a key differentiation of a professional maids services. Proper cleaning techniques, time efficiency, appropriate use of tools and supplies ensure that your house is cleaned and maintained at the highest standards.

  1. Insurance
Professional house cleaning service not only means dusting, moping and disinfecting surfaces. It means more than that, it means security for both homeowners and employees. What would happen if your personal property is damaged or a house cleaning technician is injured in your house? Well, a professional house cleaning service carries insurance to deal with these unexpected but possible situations.

Will your individual cleaner provide this security? maybe not, so you’d better check your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure you have the coverage needed for these particular situations

  1. Community involvement
One of the first objectives of any company must be giving back. Trusted professional house cleaning companies are not the exception. Investing in the success of the community should be as important for business owners as investing in their employees. Any type of contribution towards charitable programs, volunteer hours and the feeling of doing the right thing are major indicators of a responsible house cleaning company.

Unfortunately, the solo character of independent house cleaners limits them to commit constantly to these causes.

  1. Guarantee
Professional house cleaning services are responsibly committed to deliver quality work. In case of mistakes, they are prepared to consistently guarantee their services and redo the areas a customer is not satisfied with. Individual house cleaners might not have the time or resources to deliver this warranty. The 100% satisfaction guaranteed is another element to consider between professional maid services and individual cleaners.
  2. Who is the house cleaner employer?
One of the most important elements to consider when hiring help to clean your house is the legal aspect.

Hiring a professional house cleaning service will guarantee that you will only be responsible for paying the company for their services and they will take care of the legality part of their employees.

Now, if you decide to hire and individual here is a recap of some of the requirements:

In case you pay this individual $2000 or more in 2016 (Lets say 26 biweekly cleanings at $77 per week) you are obligated to withhold and pay Federal income, Social Security Medicare and Unemployment taxes. You may want to take a look at the IRS publication 926 that clearly states your responsibilities as employer, yes, you have read it right, employer.

  1. Price
Last but not least, the price fact. It is understandable that price is a determining factor in making a decision, however it can’t be the conclusive factor. In terms of house cleaning rates individual house cleaners will always win. They are definitely in the economical side of the industry, however, it is always better to compare apples to apples.

In conclusion, we think is important for customers to realize that there is a huge difference between price and value and that in the long run, cheaper is not always better. The decision is yours.

Is your house a mess? Do you find that you never have enough time to wash the dishes, make the beds, vacuum, and have a few minutes of free time for yourself? Are there things that need cleaning that you keep putting off? Do you settle for superficial cleaning when a room really requires a deep clean? If so, you may be in need of a cleaning service.

It doesn’t matter if you live in a rainy city like Orlando, Florida and track in a lot of mud, or if you live in a city with little rain – your house will inevitably need a periodic cleaning. This is especially true if you have small children or pets. Despite this, many people are apprehensive about spending money on a cleaning service. If you’re unsure of the benefits of a quality, professional cleaning team, here are a few reasons why it’s worth the money.

Freeing-up Time

When you hire a cleaning service, not only will your home actually shine, but you’ll free up time for yourself and your family. Whether you take up a hobby, spend time with the kids, work out, read a book, or tend to other household chores like gardening or repairs, a cleaning service can be a vital utility. Imagine returning home from a long day at work to a spic-and-span home. Just seeing the shine is worth it.

Saving You Money

While some people may think hiring a cleaning service is a needless expense, in truth, it can actually save you money. For someone who works from home, hiring a cleaning service can free up hours you could be earning money. In addition, a tidy, organized home will help you be more productive — you won’t have to clean up your work area every time you want to get something done.

Keeping You Healthy

For many people, messiness is cause for anxiety. They feel pressured to clean and frustrated when they don’t clean enough. Hiring a cleaning service can alleviate that stress. In addition, being clean and organized will reduce the strain caused by lost keys, receipts, glasses and remote controls. What’s more, for allergy sufferers, eliminating dust and bacteria may do wonders for your breathing.

Be sure to only hire bonded and insured cleaners. However, despite this, if you have expensive jewelry, collectibles or cash at home, be sure to store these things in a safe location. Consider investing in a fireproof safe that attaches to a wall. Even if you trust your cleaning service, having valuable items in a safe place while someone else is in your home will still provide extra peace of mind.

Remember, a cleaner doesn’t replace the need to properly maintain your home. If you have chipping paint or other damage to your walls, the right person to call is a painter. But with a cleaning company taking care of the dirty work, you’ll have extra time to see to the small chores that need to be taken care of around the house.

ac cleaning

dubai ac cleaning , abu dhabi ac cleaning, sharjah ac cleaning , AL ain ac cleaning , I asked my neighbor who hoses off his ac cleaning condenser every spring why he does it. “Because my dad always told me I had to,” he said.

Conventional wisdom like what my neighbor’s dad imparted may always seem right. But through my HVAC scholarship – the study of heating, ventilation and ac cleaning service – I’ve learned that this particular presumption is probably wrong.

Dirty equipment

The equipment I’m talking about washing is the outdoor part of central air-conditioning systems that move heat from homes into the outdoors.

Technically known as condenser coils, they are usually about the size of a large garbage can but they can be as small as a bucket or as big as a refrigerator. Some are protected by louvered grilles but most are exposed to the elements. Their metal fins help transfer heat to the air. They contain tubes that carry the hot refrigerant, which gives off heat as it condenses.

Stuff like windblown seeds, dust and grass clippings tends to collect on the coil surface. Most homeowners and HVAC companies envision that this untidy-looking stuff acts like an insulating blanket, slowing down the passage of heat from inside to outside. Any debris that accumulates would also interfere with airflow over the coil, further restricting the system’s ability to expel heat.

The nitty-gritty

Mehdi Mehrabi, an architectural engineering graduate student, and I set out to learn the extent to which dirty residential air conditioners are less efficient than clean ones. What we found astonished us – and many of the other experts in this field.

Previous work on this question simulated outdoor dirt with synthetic materials in a laboratory setting, or used reduced airflow as a proxy for the effects of dirty coils. Although it’s necessary to carefully to control operating conditions, we took a novel approach: collecting condensers that had gotten dirty through ordinary residential use, and bringing them to the lab for study with a special test apparatus.

This meant that they were coated in real-world dust and other crud in everyday amounts. We tested the dirty air conditioners, then washed them thoroughly with a garden hose and tested again. We also used a commercial coil cleaning fluid and tested them for a third time.

Surprisingly, we found that dirty air conditioner condensers often perform better than clean ones. The change in condenser coil heat transfer performance ranged from a 7 percent increase to a 7 percent decrease for the coils we tested. The average change was … none at all.

The coil that registered a 7 percent improvement after getting cleaned up looked quite dirty, with 7 grams of dirt per square foot of coil surface area. But the coil that performed 7 percent worse was even dirtier, with 17 grams of dirt per square foot. It was so filthy, in fact, that it was nearly impossible to see the metal fins before we gave it a wash. Most of the condenser coils we tested in the lab were cleaner than both of those.

No insulating blanket

To see how the equipment’s performance could improve by getting dirty, we did further testing.

That next round of study suggested that the accumulated dirt stirs up the air passing over the condenser coils. Technically called “turbulence,” these little gusts can transfer heat away from the coil better. For some coil designs, this can cause the equipment to perform better when it’s dirty than when it’s clean. This is true even when the dirt has reduced the airflow rate.

If your home has one of these things, you are probably wondering whether you should you wash your own condenser. Here’s what you should know.

Cleaning your air conditioner might make it run better. It might make it run worse. But it probably won’t make any difference. I now personally believe in skipping this task, unless the coil is so dirty that it’s hard to see the metal fins. Although, if it will make you feel better, go ahead and hose it down. To be honest, that’s what I plan to do from now on.

Letting go of deep-seated beliefs of any kind is hard, whether it’s that dieting makes you lose weight in the long run – something recent studies do not support – or if this particular home maintenance ritual is justified. As news of our findings spreads, I’m bracing for some unpleasant responses from people who might lose out if the condenser-cleaning business dries up and others who simply refuse to accept that there was no basis for the conventional wisdom on this question.

SPECIALTY cleaning product

Specialty cleaning products have a narrower spectrum of uses than all-purpose products. They are designed for specific surfaces, such as glass, bathroom surfaces, ovens, drains, metal, floors, carpets, furniture and upholstery, and the soils that usually collect on these surfaces. By concentrating on specific conditions, specialty products can deliver optimum performance and convenience.

Bleaches Use of liquid household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) for removing stains on fabrics is well known. Sodium hypochlorite is similarly effective on stains found on hard surfaces. In addition, it can be used as a disinfectant to kill bacteria, viruses and fungi, including moulds and mildew.
Disinfectants and Disinfectant Cleaners Disinfectants contain antimicrobial agents, such as pine oil, sodium hypochlorite, quaternary ammonium compounds or phenols, which kill bacteria and viruses on surfaces. A surface should be free of heavy soil for effective disinfection.Disinfectant cleaners contain surfactants and builders to remove soil in addition to antimicrobial agents to kill germs. Therefore, they are effective at cleaning surfaces as well as killing germs. Label instructions must be followed to assure the surface is disinfected.
Drain Openers Today, drain opening products fall into two categories. The newer category includes maintenance products or “build-up removers”; the second category includes traditional drain openers.Build-up removers are liquids formulated to prevent the grease and soap scum build-up which causes clogged drains. They contain enzymes or a culture of bacteria which produces enzymes. The enzymes break down and digest organic materials, such as grease, that accumulate in pipes. Build-up removers can be used on an ongoing basis to keep drains free flowing. For opening clogged drains, a traditional drain opener may be required. Drain openers are chemically strong liquid or crystal products formulated for this demanding job. Clogged kitchen drains are often caused by plugs of solid grease which may have all types of materials imbedded in them, obstructing the free flow of water. Sodium hydroxide is often used to generate heat to melt fat and break it down to simpler substances that can be rinsed away. Some products also contain agents to produce gas which provides agitation in the drain, a further help in opening drains.Clogged bathroom drains are often caused by hair, soap particles, toothpaste or combinations of these materials. On these problems, liquid drain openers containing sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide can work well.
Glass Cleaners Glass cleaners are designed to clean glass surfaces without streaking or leaving any residual soil or product. Liquid glass cleaners are available in bottles with trigger sprays or in aerosol containers. The products contain surfactants to loosen soil, solvents to dissolve oily soils, and water as the medium to carry surfactants and solvents. Builders are included to remove heavier soils, especially oily soils. Alkaline builders, such as ammonia, are more effective on acidic soils like body oils or cooking grease. Acetic acid (vinegar) provides better performance on alkaline soils like mineral salts. The spraying arrangement, a pump or a pressurized aerosol container, helps in applying the product across the surface to be cleaned, assures uniform distribution and minimizes product waste.Opaque creamy glass cleaners contain surfactants and solvents. They also contain colloidal clays and silica, which absorb soil and dry after spreading. Any remaining dried solid shows areas that need to be wiped.
Glass and Multi-surface Cleaners These function as effective cleaners on a variety of kitchen surfaces and have the additional feature of being non-streaking on glass. The unique combination of surfactants, solvents, mild alkalis and builders provides the non-streaking characteristic.
Hard Water Mineral Removers Water hardness is caused by the presence of dissolved mineral salts, such as those of calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese. When hard water evaporates, a mineral deposit is left behind which can build up over time. Hard water mineral removers are formulated to remove such deposits. These products come as powders or as liquids with push-pull tops or trigger sprays. They contain acids, such as citric, oxalic, sulphamic or hydroxyacetic acid, to dissolve minerals, limescale and rust. Some include surfactants to aid in cleaning and organic solvents to help remove soap scum.Mineral removers are effective where mineral deposits are visible around faucets, shower doors, and in tea kettles, humidifiers and toilet bowls. Their regular use helps prevent mineral deposit build-up.
Metal Cleaners and Polishes Metal presents a special cleaning problem, tarnish (the oxidation of metal), which is the principal soil to be removed. Metal cleaning products are sold as pastes, thick opaque liquids or clear liquids which may hold a fine abrasive in suspension.Surface impurities on most metals are removed more easily in an acidic medium. Metal cleaning products, therefore, usually contain organic acids, such as oxalic, sulphuric or citric. To aid in mechanical removal of tarnish and soil and contribute to metallic luster, a very mild abrasive is present as a polishing/buffering agent. Clay-like materials, such as kaopolite or finely divided hydrous silica, are common mild abrasives used.Metal cleaning formulations may also contain surfactants for ease of spreading the product as well as an aid in soil removal. Some products also contain an antioxidant, which protects the clean metal against rapid retarnishing.
Oven Cleaners These generally are liquids that are packaged in aerosol containers. Charred grease and other food components make up the soils deposited on oven walls. For most oven cleaners designed to work in a cold oven, strong ingredients are necessary to remove burned-on soils. A strong alkali, like sodium hydroxide (lye), is the principal agent in such oven cleaning products. During use, the alkali converts the grease to soap,Another product type uses a combination of less alkaline salts plus oven heat to aid soil removal. Surfactant is also present to help penetrate soil and wet the surface.Oven cleaners are formulated to be as thick as possible to allow the product to cling to the soiled, greasy, vertical oven surfaces.
Shower Cleaners Daily shower cleaners are formulated to prevent build up of soap scum, mildew stains and hard water deposits without rinsing, wiping or scrubbing, and without leaving a dull residue or streaks.Daily shower cleaners are available as liquids in trigger spray bottles. The products contain surfactants to help clean and prevent soap scum and hard water deposits and to aid water in sheeting off shower surfaces. Some products contain builders or chelates, and alcohol or solvents to assist in the continual cleaning process. Some also contain antimicrobial agents to kill germs, including mould and mildew. All the daily shower cleaners contain fragrance.Daily shower cleaners are safe to use on many shower and tub surfaces. However, some products may not be suitable for marble, some plastics or other surfaces; read the product label for specific information. Mist shower surfaces right after showering while the walls are wet and warm. No further scrubbing, wiping or rinsing is required, so simply spray and walk away. For best results, start with a clean shower. If the shower is soiled, it will take two to four weeks to remove pre-existing shower deposits.
Toilet Bowl Cleaners This category comprises many product forms. Whatever the form, the products are designed to maintain a clean and pleasant smelling toilet bowl. Some products also disinfect.Included in this category are thickened liquids that cling to the sides of the toilet bowl, fresheners that keep the bowl smelling fresh, and various forms of in-tank cleaners that release active ingredients into the bowl with each flush of the toilet.Surfactants plus oxidants or acids are the primary ingredients for soil removal. The presence of acids or sequestrants facilitates removal of stains caused by hard water deposits and iron. Specific organic stains are cleaned by oxidizing agents present in some products. Toilet bowl cleaners with disinfecting action contain antimicrobial agents, such as quaternary ammonium salts. To dissolve stubborn rust and hard water stains, some products may contain strong acids, such as hydrochloric acid. Products containing sodium hypochlorite as the oxidizing agent also include alkalis, such as sodium hydroxide, sodium metasilicate or sodium carbonate. Most toilet bowl cleaners contain a pleasing fragrance.
Because of the incompatible nature of these products, manufacturers often warn the consumer not to mix them with other cleaning products.

Tub, Tile and Sink Cleaners These specialty products are formulated to remove not only the normal soils found on bathroom and kitchen surfaces, but also hard water deposits, soap scum, rust stains and discolourations due to mould growth, which are common to these areas.Tub, tile and sink cleaners are usually liquids. They are marketed as dilutable liquids, trigger sprays and aerosols. Because many soiled surfaces are vertical, some sprays are dispensed as foams to prevent excessively fast run-off of the cleaning product.Almost universally, such cleaners contain surfactants to penetrate and loosen soil. In addition, they may contain special sequestering agents and specific solvents to dissolve and keep calcium (hardness) deposits, soap scum and metal discolourations in solution.Products designed to remove mildew stains may also contain an oxidant, such as sodium hypochlorite, antimicrobial agents to attack mould and mildew, and alkaline ingredients, such as sodium carbonate, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide.
Depending on the soil, both acidic and alkaline conditions promote cleaning. Tub, tile and sink cleaners which target soap scum and water hardness deposits may contain acids, such as hydroxyacetic or sulphamic acids, in addition to the ingredients mentioned above.

Carpet and Rug Cleaners Carpet and rug shampoos are sold as concentrated or ready-to-use liquids, trigger sprays, powders and aerosols. They are formulated to wet the pile of the carpet and take up oily and greasy soils. Such products provide a system that traps soil in suspension and dries to a brittle solid residue. The brittle residue containing the soil particles is then removed by vacuuming. Carpet and rug cleaners actually clean a surface and should not be confused with carpet fresheners which are formulated to reduce malodours that may be found in carpets and rugs.As with many cleaning products, a surfactant is the essential ingredient. A polymer, which helps in making the dried foam brittle, is usually present in carpet/rug cleaners. In addition, shampoos may contain colour brighteners, deodorizers to counteract malodours, and soil retardants to keep carpets cleaner longer.Carpet cleaning can also be achieved by the use of wet, free-flowing powders. These powders contain water, solvents and surfactants to emulsify soil. The emulsified soil is absorbed onto the powders. Once dry, the powder can be easily removed by vacuuming.Besides products to be used directly on carpets or rugs, there are liquid cleaning formulations which are marketed for use with carpet/rug shampooing equipment. The ingredients are essentially identical for both products.
Steam cleaning equipment requires special formulations, as foam interferes with the steam cleaning process. If there is residue from previous shampooings, a defoamer (silicone emulsion) may be used.

Dusting Products Dusting products are usually marketed as trigger sprays or aerosols that dispense the ingredients in a fine spray onto surfaces or a dusting cloth. Such products can be used on furniture to attract, pick up and retain light dust and soil on cleaning cloths. They are not appropriate for use on floors as they may make the surface slippery. These products function by picking up and holding dust on the applicator rather than simply spreading and redistributing the dust over furniture or in the area. Some products also contain additives for helping remove oil-based and water-based stains from furniture.Ingredients may include a light hydrocarbon oil used for dust pick-up. An organic solvent is the active ingredient for removal of oil-based stains; water may be present to pick up water-based soils.
Floor Care Products In this group of liquid and paste products, it’s necessary to formulate specialties within specialties because flooring materials come in many types: hard flooring such as stone, masonry and wood; and resilient flooring such as vinyl, asphalt, rubber, linoleum and cork. Each requires a specially formulated product for maximum effectiveness in removing soil, polishing the surface and leaving it with a shine and a protective coat. No-rinse products offer added convenience and easy application. Dusting aids are often used to help remove light particulate soil. Most floor care products contain water as the carrier for small particles of wax such as polyethylene, and polymers such as polyacrylate. When dry, they leave a shine and a light, clear protective layer on the surface. In products for wood or cork flooring, a solvent acts as the carrier for wax particles, such as those of natural carnauba wax which is especially effective in providing a pleasing shine and a hard finish.Floor care products that only clean are closely related in composition to the all-purpose cleaners. In products formulated for resilient flooring, special emphasis is on clear drying without leaving a cloudy or sticky residue. Most resilient floor cleaner products also contain a low level of surfactant to loosen and suspend soil.
With continued use, most floor polishes build up a layer of residue that eventually needs to be stripped off with specially formulated strippers or a mixture of ammonia, all-purpose cleaner and water. True one-step products are designed to be self-stripping. They are formulated so that a new application of product dissolves the old polish and re-applies a fresh coat which dries to the original shine. The sponge mop or cloth is rinsed after each section is done and most of the dirt ends up in the rinse water.

Also marketed are products which do not clean but are used solely for imparting a gloss to floors. Such products are clear emulsions of acrylic polymers, which dry to a hard shiny finish. Some products may also contain wax particles.

In products for wood flooring, liquid or paste wax is still the principal gloss-producing ingredient. Many products require buffing to increase shine. To help prevent slippery conditions, apply the product according to label directions and buff thoroughly.

Furniture Cleaners and Polishes Furniture cleaners and polishes are marketed as liquids, pastes or aerosols. The dispensing arrangement of aerosols contributes to uniform deposition of the cleaning product.Furniture cleaners/polishes are designed to remove dust and stains from wood surfaces, produce shine and provide protection against water spots. They are formulated to reduce wax build-up with continued use.The principal ingredients contribute to natural wood shine and provide water repellency to furniture cleaners/polishes, They include silicone fluids and a wax, often a so-called microcrystalline wax. Lemon oil (a non-drying oil) and tung oil (a drying oil) are also used for this purpose. Both are used in products without water. Tung oil may lead to an antique, matte finish which is preferred by some consumers. In addition to contributing to shine, silicone fluids also provide easy application and reduce smearing during application. Silicone helps deliver a uniform surface. A hydrocarbon solvent helps remove oily stains and some wax build up.Furniture cleaners/polishes can be formulated as water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions. An emulsion stabilizer is present in both to prevent the product from separating into two layers. Fragrance and colour round out the product formulation.
Upholstery Cleaners Upholstery cleaners are very similar to carpet and rug cleaners. They are marketed as concentrated or ready-to-use liquids, trigger sprays, aerosols and even as powders.Surfactants and materials such as anti-soil agents are the essential components in upholstery cleaning products.

The following are several home chemicals which can be used for light cleaning tasks. In a fully formulated product, manufacturers have the opportunity of providing multiple functions, like cleaning with the assistance of a surfactant. In general, a formulated product may provide more advantages in performance and convenience than a single-ingredient product can.

As with formulated cleaning products, you should not mix home chemicals unless you can confirm that the mixture is safe and effective.

Ammonia and baking soda are weak alkalis. Because some soils are acidic in nature, these alkaline materials can be helpful in their removal.

Ammonia is a volatile alkali and hence leaves no solid residue as it dries, making it easy to rinse off completely. The combination of volatility and mild alkalinity is the reason why low levels of ammonia are frequently found in formulated glass cleaners. Ammonia can also be used to strip wax.

The scratchless abrasive action of dry baking soda helps in removing light soils because the baking soda crystal is harder than soil, but softer than sensitive surfaces such as fibreglass. Baking soda can also be used to deodorize refrigerators and freezers, where it destroys and also absorbs food odours.

In household cleaning formulations, the surfactant (surface active agent) is often the most important single component. One or more surfactants are present in most all-purpose and specialty products. Other ingredients soften water, provide alkalinity, bleach, destroy microorganisms, and provide a wide variety of specific cleaning and aesthetic functions.

Surfactants are organic compounds whose molecules consist of two parts: a water-hating (hydrophobic) part and a water-loving (hydrophilic) part. When a surfactant molecule is introduced into water, the water-hating part tries to escape by attaching itself to any available surface other than water. At the same time, the water-loving part tries to remain in water. As a result, surfactants tend to strongly “absorb” or cling to many surfaces, such as fabric, soil, glass, and where the water and air meet (the water/air interface).

When they absorb to a surface, surfactants can loosen and remove the soils from the surface.

When they absorb to soil, surfactants hold soil particles in suspension and help prevent them from redepositing onto the surface from which they have been removed. When they are absorbed at the water/air interface, they reduce the surface tension of water and allow the water to spread out. Without the use of a surfactant, water tends to “bead up” in droplets. This beading slows down the wetting of the surface and inhibits the cleaning process. Surfactants make water “wetter.”

Surfactants are classified by their ionic (electrical) charge.

Anionic surfactants have a negative charge. Anionic surfactants are effective in removing particulate (dirt, dust, etc.) and oily soils. In hard water, they react with positively charged water hardness minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. Soap is the original anionic surfactant. In hard water, it combines with calcium and magnesium salts to form an insoluble soap film or scum. In general, anionic surfactants tend to generate higher suds levels than other classes of surfactants. Cationic surfactants have a positive charge. In hard surface cleaners, they can be used as effective antimicrobial agents. non-ionic surfactants do not have an electrical charge. Because of this, they tend to be less seriously affected by water hardness. In general, they are low foaming and are especially useful in products which are designed to require little rinsing.

The major surfactants in cleaning products are biodegradable. This means that in sewage treatment facilities they are broken down by bacteria, first to smaller molecules and ultimately to carbon dioxide, water and minerals.

Builders follow surfactants in importance as ingredients in household cleaners, particularly in all-purpose cleaners. The most basic function of builders is to soften water by tying up the hardness minerals in water so they do not interfere with the cleaning action of the surfactants. Some builders also aid in keeping soil particles in suspension, thus assuring that cleaned surfaces remain clean.

There are three types of builders.

A sequestering builder is, in many ways, the most effective type. Sometimes also referred to as a chelating agent (from the Greek word for crab’s claw), this type of builder forms a tightly bound, water-soluble complex with calcium or magnesium ions. These water hardness ions are then removed in the rinsing operation. Some builders also tie up the ions of heavy metals, such as iron and manganese. Heavy metal ions can form coloured products when oxidized by air, oxygen or bleaches. Their inactivation thus contributes to good cleaning results. Complex phosphates, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium citrate are common sequestering builders.
Precipitating builders also remove hardness ions. They do so by forming insoluble calcium compounds. In the cleaning process, this precipitate needs to be removed along with the other soils on the surfaces being cleaned. Sodium carbonate and sodium silicate are examples of precipitating builders.
Ion exchange builders function by trading electrically charged particles. Sodium aluminosilicate (zeolite) is an ion exchange builder.
Other ingredients are present in household cleaners to varying degrees, depending on the job the product is formulated to perform.

Abrasives contribute to the mechanical effectiveness of scouring cleaners. In general, abrasives consist of small particles of minerals. Among other properties, they are distinguished by their hardness, a property that is measured on the Moh scale. This scale ranks substances by their relative ability to produce a scratch. Diamond, with a value of 10 on the Moh scale, can scratch almost anything. Glass, on this scale, has a value of 7. The following are among the minerals used in scouring cleaners in order of decreasing hardness: silica (7), feldspar (6) and calcite (3).
Acids can dissolve calcium and metal salts and find use in tub, tile, sink and toilet bowl cleaners. Phosphoric acid is a common ingredient in such formulations. Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid used in some toilet bowl cleaners. As an organic acid, hydroxyacetic acid is milder than hydrochloric or phosphoric, but one which provides a measure of sequestering effectiveness. Vinegar (acetic acid) is the weakest acid in this series.
Alkalis ensure that pH is maintained at a desirably high level during cleaning. Sodium hydroxide and sodium metasilicate are strong alkalis which not only maintain a high pH, but also play a primary role in removing solid grease. Sodium carbonate, in addition to providing a moderately high pH, provides buffering to maintain pH levels when a product is diluted. It can also precipitate out water hardness ions and, thereby, provide some building function.
Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) provides alkalinity at a somewhat lower pH. It is useful for buffering formulations which will contact the skin and for other uses where mildness is important.
Silicates perform additional useful functions. They provide corrosion protection, particularly on “white” metals like aluminum. They are also helpful in suspending fine particles and reducing the redeposition of soil that has been removed from surfaces. Ammonia is a particularly useful alkali in floor wax removers.
Antimicrobial agents can destroy bacteria and viruses by interfering with their metabolism or destroying their cell walls. Different chemical structures can serve this purpose, including alcohol, sodium hypochlorite, iodine, pine oil, phenolic and quaternary ammonium compounds. Such molecules act as disinfectants in household cleaning product formulations.
Bleaching agents act as soil and stain removers. They attack soil chemically, breaking it down to smaller units. Coloured soils and stains are oxidized to a colourless, more easily removable form. The most commonly used bleaching agent is sodium hypochlorite, which is prepared from chlorine gas and a solution of sodium hydroxide. Sodium hypochlorite is an effective, relatively indiscriminate oxidizing agent. Not only does it attack soil, but it is also a disinfectant capable of attacking and destroying bacteria, viruses and mould. It is an important component in many tile and grout cleaners.
Colourants are present in most products. They provide a product with an individual characteristic and an appealing appearance. Often, they also act as tracers. In certain toilet bowl cleaners, for example, the disappearance of colour indicates the product is exhausted. In other products, the tracer indicates the location of product and helps assure uniform product application, as in certain floor cleaners.
Enzymes break down soils into simpler forms that can easily be removed by the cleaner. They are proteins that are classified by the type of soil they break down: amylase works on starch soils, lipase on fatty and oily soils and protease on protein soils.
Fragrances cover the base odour of the chemicals used in cleaning products. They may also counteract any malodour inherent in soil itself and leave a pleasing scent after cleaning.
Polymers are compounds whose molecules are very large, compared to most of the other materials found in household cleaners. The molecules are made up of many (up to millions) smaller molecules, which may be identical or which may be of two, and sometimes three, kinds. Linking the smaller molecules to each other is a process referred to as polymerization. When polymers dry, they form films, much in the same manner in which paint dries to a thin film. This is particularly helpful in floor care products where the film protects the surface and may provide a shine as well.Polymers can also be used as builders and can assist as thickening agents.
Processing aids are added to keep the product homogeneous under varying storage conditions, and to provide desirable dispensing characteristics. Such aids include clays, polymers, sodium silicate and sodium sulphate.
Preservatives protect the product against the natural effects that occur when a product ages, like decay, discolouration, oxidation and bacterial attack. Preservatives include ingredients such as butylated hydroxy toluene, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and glutaraldehyde.
Solvents (organic) have a specific place in products where grease removal and cleaning without leaving a residue is important: window cleaners and products for removing finger marks on walls, for example. Since such products are generally liquids with water as the main ingredient, useful solvents must not only be able to dissolve grease, but must also be compatible with water. Organic compounds make up the solvents of choice in these products.

Advances in floor cleaning equipment

New floor cleaning service equipment addresses health care’s concerns regarding patient safety and experience while keeping an eye on costs

Low noise levels, ergonomics, maneuverability and ease of use are some of the variables that health care facilities managers need to consider when selecting floor cleaning equipment. They also should seek out equipment that can handle a variety of hospital flooring challenges as well as water conservation features that provide hygienic results.

These features are available on the latest floor cleaning equipment, according to manufacturers that supply the nation’s hospitals. Equipment that is compact, maneuverable and has noise-dampening components increasingly is being used to clean patient rooms and other health care spaces. In addition, ecofriendly options are available that eliminate the need to use multiple chemicals, which ultimately reduces supply chain costs.

Raising productivity, reducing costs

Experts note that the latest floor cleaning machines focus on increasing productivity and reducing cleaning costs, addressing the issue of the high cost of maintenance and budget cuts with which hospitals must contend. Many say that patient experience also plays a role in new floor cleaning technology.

Recent additions to the market include solutions for hard-to-clean and high-traffic areas. In addition, machines are being built for quieter operation. Also, respiratory problems and other health issues associated with air contaminants create a need for floor cleaning equipment and practices that do not diminish indoor air quality, while improved water purification helps to eliminate bacteria.

“New technology is available that can reduce the use of conventional cleaning chemicals, reducing exposure to volatile organic compounds and fragrances for patients who may have chemical sensitivities,” says Rick Cohn, health care manager, Tennant Co., Minneapolis. “High-efficiency, particulate air filters on vacuums improve indoor air quality by reducing the level of airborne particles, including those associated with allergens.”

Also, advances in rapid-drying, carpet cleaning technology enable more frequent interim carpet cleaning with minimal disruption. These quieter machines dry carpet in 30 minutes or less and allow cleaning to be performed while patients and visitors are present, Cohn adds.

Historically, hard-floor care equipment has revolved around traditional disc floor machines and scrubbers. Although disc or rotary units are still in wide use, cleaning equipment manufacturers have responded to new types of flooring by offering both cylindrical and orbital technology.

“Each of these technologies helps to tackle the different floor care challenges seen today,” says Michael Schaffer, senior executive with Tacony Corp., commercial floor care division, St. Louis. “There have been significant advances in noise reduction as well, making the use of automated cleaning equipment more practical in noise-sensitive environments.”

Recent introductions

Among a wide range of equipment available to the health care market, Nilfisk, Plymouth, Minn., offers orbital scrubbers in walk-behind, stand-on and rider models, as well as a floor machine. These orbital scrubbers use a detergent dispensing system that allows the operator to use the minimal amount of detergent needed for cleaning an area, while providing a burst of power in heavily soiled areas.

The stand-on and rider models feature a quiet mode that permits daytime cleaning in sound-sensitive areas. Also, the minimal water used with the orbital scrubbers can reduce a facility’s water consumption. Paired with a squeegee design, they leave floors dry in a single pass, says Kim Waldvogel, national account manager, health care, Nilfisk.

One challenge that hospitals pose is the increased use of ultra-hard or epoxy-type floor finishes, which can make it difficult for traditional orbital scrubbers to remove this finish using plain water. “Using these types of finishes forces facilities managers to resort to conventional floor stripping, forgoing the cost and labor savings that chemical-free finish removal affords while increasing floor maintenance complexity,” says Waldvogel.

New orbital floor machines, however, have overcome this challenge because they have the power and weight to cut through these types of finishes, Waldvogel notes. Orbital scrubbing technology allows the operator to remove floor finish using water only, nearly eliminating the need for conventional stripping methods.

Tennant Co. recently introduced the T300 Walk-Behind Scrubber, which allows operators to choose from multiple machine configurations to optimize cleaning performance across a variety of hard surface conditions found in hospitals. Configuration options include single-disk, orbital, dual-disk and dual-cylindrical. The T300 can be used with ec-H2O NanoClean, a detergent-free technology that helps hospitals reduce the environmental impact of cleaning.

“Not only are soils removed, but no chemical residue is left behind, so hospital floors retain that polished look with simplified ongoing floor maintenance,” Cohn explains. “Scrubbers using ec-H2O NanoClean can scrub three times longer with a single tank of water and use 70 percent less water than conventional floor scrubbing methods. This allows hospitals to replace many of the chemical solutions they may be using in their current scrubbers.”

Betco Corp., Toledo, Ohio, has introduced a line of automatic Stealth scrubbers, so named because they operate at 54 dBA (comparable to the sound of a dishwasher running in the next room). This allows floor cleaning any time of the day without fear of disturbing patients or staff. The company’s new floor cleaners also feature Malodor Sensory Technology, which destroys any health care-related odor that the cleaner encounters.

“Malodor technology achieves complete transformation of the odor-causing molecule, thus eliminating the odor, not just covering it up,” explains Scott Blakely, vice president, marketing. “The technology first attaches to odor-causing molecules and then permanently transforms the molecules while precipitating to the ground.”

The new TASKI swingo 2100 micro scrubber drier from Diversey Care, a division of Sealed Air Corp., Zurich, Switzerland, is an ultracompact rider machine that covers large areas, up to 5,000 square meters, and works autonomously for long periods between refills and recharges, the company states.

The machine includes an offset feature designed to clean up against walls and the floor edge in a single pass. It also uses low-energy LED lighting, which allows operation for longer periods of time without drawing excessive battery charge. This is ideal for low-ambient lighting applications and promotes machine visibility to improve safety. An “active sitting” driving position reduces operator fatigue while allowing easy access to cleaning areas, the company states. Also, machine speed is automatically reduced when turning to promote stability.

Advances in automation

Intellibot, recently acquired by Sealed Air Corp., offers a line of robotic, hands-free floor cleaning machines for the health care industry, according to Stephen Dalton, Intellibot integration leader. The line includes:

• Hands-free cleaning systems. These allow the operator to push a button and walk away while the machine cleans.

• Eco Save. A four-stage recycling system that can filter water down to one micron, providing clean, reusable water. These machines reduce, reuse and recycle water to eliminate 85 percent of water and chemicals used during each shift.

• Intelli-Trak telemetry system. This addresses the issue of remote diagnostics and repair, and provides for fleet management of floor cleaning activity, which translates to reduced downtime and faster response to service issues. The cleaning crew can multitask because the robots clean the floors while the custodians clean hot spots or high-touch areas.

Dalton sees robotic cleaning as the next evolution in floor care. “While still in its infancy, the demand for automated cleaning machines is growing rapidly, particularly in developed markets, due to significant advances in technology, labor shortages, and the need for higher productivity and training in daily cleaning tasks,” he explains. “Floor cleaning robots will address the issues of rising labor costs, scarcity of labor, and increased demand for electronic tracking and data records. The robots will deliver a new level of performance that will increase productivity throughout health care.”

Handling small jobs floor cleaning services

New floor cleaning equipment is being designed for use in smaller, off-site facilities, a growing trend in the health care marketplace. Small, battery-operated microscrubbers can be transported between facilities; they are quiet and can clean around and under obstacles. Small, self-contained carpet extractors also are available for these facilities.

Rex Shull, product manager at Kärcher North America, Englewood, Colo., says a number of new machines are available to clean these smaller facilities. One is the Kärcher BR 35/12 scrubber, a maneuverable microscrubber with a four-gallon tank. It runs at low 62 dBA noise levels. “The lithium-ion battery pack allows for extended run times and charge times of less than one hour,” Shull says. “The steerable head rotates 200 degrees, allowing operators to get under desks, around furniture and into corners. Due to its compact size, the unit can be stored in a closet.”

Kaivac Inc., Hamilton, Ohio, developer of No-Touch Cleaning and OmniFlex Crossover floor cleaning systems, recently introduced an OmniFlex AutoVac with lithium-ion smart battery technology. The cordless system can clean up to 20,000 sq. ft. per hour. Also, there is no need for workers to dust mop floors before using the machine.

Sitting atop a self-dispensing trolley bucket, fresh cleaning solution is applied directly to the floor to be cleaned. As it is dispensed and the machine moves over the floor, the system simultaneously spreads the cleaning solution and provides enough agitation to loosen soils — all of which are suctioned by the AutoVac.

Tacony Corp. has introduced a line of small automatic floor scrubbers, which apply cleaning solution onto the floor, scrub it and then vacuum the floor dry in a single pass. “In the past, these machines have been quite large and were restricted to use in hallways and other open areas,” Schaffer says. “Our small floor scrubbers can be used in patient rooms, nurse stations and other tight areas that could only be mopped by hand in the past.”

Sustainable and safe

In the future, floor cleaning equipment in health care environments will become even more sustainable and safer to use, says Cohn of Tennant Co. Machines are being designed for easier clean-out, quieter operation, and with better filtration on vacuums and burnishers, he says.

Among equipment manufacturers, the focus has changed from cleaning for appearance only, to cleaning for health and safety too, says Schaffer of Tacony Corp. “We will continue to see cleaning equipment and related technologies that support the needs of urgent care and outpatient centers as different types of medical services move beyond traditional settings.”

How to Intensely kitchen cleaning

Cluttered cabinets, a dusty refrigerator top, and an oven that smokes every time you bake are not the components of an ideal kitchen. Revive this important room in your home with a step-by-step tutorial on intensely cleaning the kitchen. You will need a bunch of cleaning materials and at least 90 minutes of time.

Set the mood for a productive cleaning session. Listen to music, an audiobook, or a foreign language tape. The time will pass a lot more quickly with an enjoyable atmosphere.

Trying to sort through the pantry cabinet for your oven cleaner might make you frustrated enough to start decluttering the cabinet, which will take you away from a regimented way of approaching this chore. So, first, gather all of the necessary supplies:

Dust mop (preferably with a long handle)
Cleaning cloths
Small bucket with handle
Vacuum with attachment
All-purpose cleaner, dish soap, or mild cleaner of choice
Oven cleaner
Shelf or cabinet liner and drawer dividers
Broom and mop or towel

Begin With a 15-Minute Cleanup
Clear out the clutter and dirty dishes. This will give you room to do the actual intense cleaning projects. Do not worry about cleaning the floors yet.

Clean the Walls
Dust the ceiling and corners of walls; you will need a dust mop to reach the high spots. Determine if the walls need to be washed in dirty spots. Spot wash and don’t forget air vents, doorknobs, doors, and switch plates. Walls will likely need to be washed more often in this room than in others. You may not have noticed that the hand mixer or blender sloshed goop all over the wall; clean the grease, grime, and spilled food from your walls.

Dust and Clean Art and Photos
Be careful when cleaning framed art and photographs. Never spray cleanser or water onto the frame. The liquid can seep behind the glass and damage the pictures. Instead, lightly wet a clean cloth to wipe the frame and glass.

Clean the Ceiling Fan
Do not forget to dust off the ceiling fan. You may need to use a gentle cleanser like Murphy’s Oil Soap. Remove any light fixtures and gently wash and dry them before replacing.

Wash Drapes, Curtains, and Blinds
Take down draperies, curtains, and blinds to wash or have cleaned according to the manufacturer’s directions. Vacuum and clean windowsills and corners. Wash the insides and outsides of the windows. Remove the screens, rinse, and replace.

Tackle the Oven and Refrigerator
Apply oven cleaner to the oven and as it does its magic, get started on the refrigerator. Leave the windows in the kitchen open to avoid the overpowering smell from the oven cleaner.

Do not forget to vacuum the coils of your unplugged refrigerator. This is a great time to sweep and mop underneath it too if you can find some help to move it. Sort through the freezer and refrigerator. Throw out any expired food, mostly empty containers, and items that you bought and never used. Put the stuff to keep on the counter.

Take out the refrigerator shelves and drawers. Wash them and work on getting rid of any remaining refrigerator odors. Wipe down the entire inside of the refrigerator and freezer before replacing shelves and food. If you have a fresh box of baking soda, open it, and leave it in your refrigerator to keep odors at bay.

Once the fridge is done, return to the oven, wipe away the grease and residue, and follow the directions on the oven cleaner.

Work on the Stove
Take the knobs, burners, burner covers, and spill catchers off of the stove. Follow your the owner’s manual for information on proper cleaning methods for your model. If you no longer have it, you should be able to find the directions online with a simple search of the make and model of your stove. Some stovetops lift up to allow easy access to spills and crumbs. Wipe down the entire stove and be mindful of the best ways to clean a cooktop, gas burners, electric burners, and a range hood.

Turn to the Appliances
Unplug all appliances first. Wipe and clean the toaster, blender, microwave, and other small appliances. If the spills in the microwave are fossilized, bring a water-filled cup to boiling in the microwave. The steam should help loosen the gunk. If the microwave smells, boil lemon juice in the microwave. Do not forget to clean the turntable.

Reorganize Kitchen Cabinets and Drawers
Clean out kitchen cabinets. Line the cabinets if needed. Remove mismatched lids and bowls. Take out anything that is not being used on a regular basis. Reorganize and wash down the inside and outside of cabinets. Wipe down and clean out any drawers. Organize your flatware. This is a great time to install drawer dividers to better organize your kitchen cleaning service drawers.

Clean the Dishwasher
Run the dishwasher empty. Try adding vinegar or baking soda to the empty dishwasher before running it. If your dishwasher has a food trap in the bottom, clean it out. Wash down the outside of the dishwasher.

Sweep and Mop the Floors
Sweep and mop the floors. Do not forget the baseboards. One of the best ways to get a floor really clean is to use a rag or towel while on your hands and knees.

Why Should You Hire a House Cleaning Company?

Why Should You Hire a House Cleaning Company?

Cleaning the house is a part of homeowner maintenance. It is simply a fact of life that dishes must be done, clothes must be washed, dirt must be vacuumed off the floor and so on. No one really enjoys the chore, but it cannot go unattended for too long. While everyone can agree that house cleaning has to be performed and yet no one really enjoys it, still people are hesitant to consider a house cleaning company.

This occurs for several reasons; people have misgivings about strangers in their home, they don’t want people handling their personal belongings, they don’t feel they can justify the expense and they’re worried about damage to their personal belongings. So, begrudgingly, we all just continue to carve out precious time from our already limited schedules to make sure the house is livable.

Professional House Cleaners Put Your Fears at Ease

While most of the objections for having someone clean your house are valid, they don’t really apply to a professional house cleaning company. A professional company, unlike most individuals, will be licensed by the state as well as bonded and insured. This means in the unlikely event something IS damaged, it is covered. Furthermore, a company brings with it qualified, trust-worthy and dependable house cleaners that have been screened.

Doing a good job is necessary and essential for a house cleaning company to stay in business, so they are extremely thorough when it comes to hiring. They also offer training, so the team that cleans your home will have specialized knowledge on the fastest and most effective way to get your home as clean as possible.

Get a Professional Shine

This brings me to the next important point to make about professional house cleaning companies; they know what they are doing. I am not suggesting that you don’t know how to clean a house. However, every profession, no matter how simple or mundane it may seem, has more efficient ways of being performed when done by trained individuals. These house cleaners know the cleaning products that work, the proper methods that get the deepest clean and can do it all extremely fast.

Aside from knowing all the tricks of the trade that make cleaning more efficient, cleaning companies also work in teams, so multiple people will be working to get your home spotless. This ensures everything gets done in a timely fashion. More people equals more hands scrubbing, more eyes checking to make sure there is no dirt and more effective and efficient use of time.
